I have to admit, best man toasts are one of my specialties. I am really good at toasting the bride and groom. The toast is a very important part of the best man speech. It wraps up the whole speech and reminds everyone listening why we are all there: to celebrate the fact that that man and woman decided to spend the rest of their lives together.
Toasts are the only part of the speech that I would not add humor to. I keep it dignified. Long and windy, or short and sweet, it is up to you. You can steal something from a poet or write it yourself.
Here are examples of good quotes from famous persons:
“In all of the wedding cake, hope is the sweetest of plums.” – Douglas Jerrold
“Our wedding was many years ago. The celebration continues to this day.” – Gene Perret
“Happy marriages begin when we marry the ones we love, and they blossom when we love the ones we marry.” – Tom Mullen
Always start your toast “To the bride and groom……” You can toast the bride, and then the groom, and then both together, or you can just toast the two of them. Again, it is up to your preferred style. If you need more ideas and tips on your toast section of the best man speech there is a great book full of information especially for best man speeches called Best man speeches: Be Fearless, Funny and Flawless! I own this book and have used it the many times I’ve been best man, you should check it out.
Think about yourself and what you would want out of a marriage. How would you want your best man to toast your marriage? Use beautiful words. Now isn’t the time to be manly. Get a little in touch with your soft side! You could include a promise to always be there, maybe tell them how you admire their relationship, their bond, their friendship. Include something good about each of their personalities and why they are perfect for each other.
After you have selected what type of style and what to include in your toast, end it with your hopes of happiness and success in their marriage and a clink of champagne flutes and a clap of hands. Then sit down and wipe the sweat from your brow. You did it! Be happy it is over and enjoy the rest of the reception having everyone telling you what a great toast you gave.
